Miguel had lived in his small car for nearly four years. A previous work injury resulted in a disability that left him unable to work and afford housing. Living in his car had worsened his condition and he was unable to follow prescribed therapy. Miguel’s physical and mental state had declined, and he needed help.
Outcome:
Fortunately, Neighborhood Networks is helping people just like Miguel. Neighborhood Networks deploys a community-based workforce—including housing navigators—to support people who have unmet health and social needs and connect them with available resources. Workforce members are employed by trusted, community-based organizations and meet clients where they are, whether at home or in their neighborhoods.
Through Neighborhood Networks, Miguel was connected with a housing navigator who provided the following assistance:
- Accompanied Miguel to view available units
- Assisted him to submit rental applications
- Helped him prepare a budget
- Helped him apply for financial assistance
With $1000 in assistance for a deposit, Miguel was finally able to move out of his car. Miguel’s housing navigator continued to work with him for nearly a year. Due to the housing navigation support and financial assistance he received, Miguel is now safely housed and stable, and his health is improving.
